C.S.A.

Community Supported Agriculture (C.S.A.) is a direct partnership between you and the farmer. “C.S.A. members pay in advance for a share of the upcoming harvest, thus ensuring the farmer is ensured a consistent market and members are ensured high-quality local produce.”

Johnson’s Backyard Garden is a local Austin farm that participates in this type of partnership. The produce is, “picked, packed, and delivered” to one of their many Austin neighborhood pick-up locations on the same day. A membership with Johnson’s includes: weekly or biweekly share of seasonal, organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs along with a newsletter, convenient online payment, flexible schedule changes, and member events. They also offer free-range eggs and organic fair trade coffee from Texas Coffee Traders.

The membership of say a four-box trial is $128. If you then want to renew, you can get 10 boxes with a 7% discount for $300 (which is only $30 a week for organic fruits and veggies).

So how much is in a box? “Each week, members receive a half-bushel box with a variety of 8-12 seasonal, organic veggies, herbs, and fruits.” One share is enough to feed a family of four for a week.

Johnson’s also offers internships and volunteer opportunities.

I really love what these guys are doing: making tasty, seasonal, organic food accessible!

Keep thinking green thoughts, y’all
